These boots belonged to one of the SWS teammates; they were worn beyond repair and headed to the landfill. I salvaged them and turned them into a colourful new art piece to reflect the 'unsung heroes' of the Waste Department, who are, in their own way, rockstars.

The entire department's purpose is to do such good work, that garbage is never front-of-mind for the city's residents; but this piece brings that work into the limelight. Many thanks to Scott, Ian, and guys like Billy, who made this residency a real success.

Artist’s Journal:

THE CROW

The landfill
Can only be
truly
understood
from a great
height
From wide
wings
and
predator’s eyes
Circling high enough
to look
down
and
see
The landscape, a dystopia
Reaching as far in all directions as one can see
While roaring truck after roaring truck brings more:
More inedible, infertile, inert, useless, horrific waste.
What would a wild black creature think, looking down, wings spread open to the earth,
Seeing the land poisoned, buried, and forever destroyed by the leavings of men?
